RV50X- Verizon Static IP - APN Not Found

We are having an issue where when our RV50X systems lose power or cell connection momentarily upon coming back online they have a chance of losing their Verizon APN and switching to APN Not Found.

In this state the lights on the front of the system look ok. The Cellular status section will populate signal strengths, will show cellular state as connected, and show the servicing Network Operator as Verizon Wireless. However, the APN status will just say APN not found.

We have run into this issue with systems on firmwares 4.16, 4.17.1, and now 4.18.

Verizon radio module used is 02.33.03.00_VERIZON_002.079_002

We have utilized information from previous posts to come up with the following way to unbrick these RV50Xs.

  1. Turn on modem and connect ethernet cable to laptop.

  2. Login to Ace manager

  3. Click Admin tab and navigate to Radio Firmware Module. Expand the options section and disable Network Operator Switching then click apply.

  4. Install Generic Radio Module Firmware. 02.33.03.00_GENERIC_002.072_001

  5. Click activate on the generic firmware.

  6. Navigate to the WAN/Cellular Tab then the SIM Slot 1 Configuration.

  7. Change the blank Override APN section to we01.VZWSTATIC and click Apply.

  8. Click Reboot.

After following these steps the systems are fully functional again. Just utilizing the Override APN section without changing off of the Verizon Radio Module does not work.

My questions are, Is there an easier way to do this? Is there a firmware fix for this problem? Are there any potential long-term issues with utilizing the generic radio firmware or with utilizing the Override APN feature?

Thank you

Hi @jschwarzer,

Welcome to our community!
To narrow down the issue, could you please answer the questions below:

  1. Please try inserting a different Verizon SIM card into your RV50X and check if the issue occurs.
  2. Please try inserting your Verizon SIM into another device and check if the issue occurs.
  3. Please ensure that antennas are properly attached to RV50X. Two antennas are required when connecting to an LTE network.
  4. To investigate this issue, please get the log and template log by the instructions and send me:
  • The configuration template file is in ACEmanager → Template, provide any name you desire for the Template Name, and then press Download to retrieve the template file.
  • Collect logs procedure:
    a. Go AceManager > Admin > Configure Logging
Set all log levels to DEFAULT (NOTICE)
    Set Linux Syslog to DISPLAY
    b. Reboot the gateway.
    c. Perform your test again.
    d. Go Admin → View log → Download Logs.

Thanks,

Hello,

  1. Putting a different Verizon SIM into a system showing the APN Not Found message does not fix the APN issue, even with the new SIM it continues to show APN Not Found.

  2. When the SIM from an APN Not Found system is put into a functional RV50X it works just fine.

  3. The issues has happened at multiple sites with a variety of different antennas, we are confident it is not an antenna issue.

  4. Log of an system with the APN Not Found issue is attached. Messages containing IPs have been removed.

Hi @jschwarzer,

After checking, I found that we had the similar issue before and below is the workaround, could you please follow and recheck?

  • Disable Network Operator Switching
  • Select the Generic image and push the “Update” button
  • Allow the firmware update to complete
  • Enable Network Operator Switching and wait for the radio module to switch back to Verizon

The various UI locations are shown below:

Also, please share the template log of your RV50X with me to check this issue.

Thanks,

We have also run into this issue with several devices that have been deployed for extended periods of time in some cases.

I need to do some more testing, but I was able to create this issue by removing the SIM from a powered device and then rebooting it. I then re-inserted the SIM and rebooted again. When the RV50X power up the second time it indicated “APN Not Found”. I had to switch the radio to generic to get it to connect to the Verizon network again.

Our devices are set to reboot every night at midnight and the APN Not Found issue always coincides with a reboot. I wonder that if during a reboot, if the RV50X is unable to read the SIM for some reason, something becomes corrupted and the APN is never “found” again, until the radio is reinitialized.

I’ve seen this happen with devices running ALEOS 4.17 and 4.18.

Hi @ken.conner,

Welcome to our community!

Could you let me know whether you have tried the workaround steps I provided above and what the results were? If not, please try it and share the results with me.

Thanks,
