I have an LX40 modem that is used in conjunction with WIN-911 for SCADA system alarming. I am able to send out SMS using the WIN-911 Workspace interface and also with QuickSMS in the LX40 interface, but no texts I send to the number are received as indicated by the “Last Incoming Message” readout under “Inbound SMS Messages.” I have included a screen grab of the SMS setup under Services->SMS. The cellular connection is fine and functioning as expected. Any idea how to troubleshoot the issue?
Hi @BrandoUSC,
Welcome to our community!
…but no texts I send to the number are received as indicated by the “Last Incoming Message” readout under “Inbound SMS Messages.”
According to description, I understand that even if you send an SMS command or send SMS messages from another device to the LX40, the LX40 does not receive any SMS, and no messages appear under ‘Last Incoming Message.’ Is that correct?
- Please make sure antennas are properly attached to LX40.
- What ALEOS version and radio firmware is LX40 running? If it’s not the latest version, please update to the latest and try again to see if the LX40 can receive SMS. Link: source.sierrawireless.com/resources/airlink/software_downloads/lx/lx-firmware-list/
- Could you please let me know which carrier’s SIM card you are using? Please ensure that the SIM can receive SMS without issues by testing it in other devices such as phones or tablets. Alternatively, you can try using SIM from a different carrier to check if the LX40 can receive SMS.
- Please provide log file and template file from LX40 and indicate the timeframe when you attempted to send an SMS message to the LX40 so I can easily check the logs.
Thanks,
Thanks for your reply. What you wrote about my issue in the first paragraph is correct.
- The antennas are properly attached.
- ALEOS is version 4.15.3, and the radio firmware version is shown as “SWI9X07Y_02.37.06.00 b91e64 jenkins.”
- The carrier is Verizon, and we tested the SIM in a phone device. It is able to send and receive SMS as normal.
- Here is a sample log file from trying to send a Quick Test SMS to my number followed by me trying to send an SMS in reply:
The phone number has been removed for privacy. The configured logs were Cellular, Services, and Network Services, all set to debug. Let me know if you need additional log information, or perhaps how you would like it set up.
The template file is in .xml format. How should I provide this to you?
Also, if I update the ALEOS and firmware, does this erase the template/configuration and set the IP back to its default? Should I reinstall the saved template after upgrading? Thank you.
Update: I upgraded all the latest radio and ALEOS firmware, and the problem still remains. Any further suggestions?
I know this is no help to you but could you tell me what your apn is set to for Verizon?
It was originally set to VZWINTERNET per Verizon’s instructions. I changed it to VZWADMIN and had the same outcome, unfortunately.
I’m in the same boat. I spent 2 hours on the phone with Verizon that ended with them telling me they would call me back at 4pm. That never happened. I went and bought an AT&T prepaid sim just to see if I could get it to work but no luck with it either. Hopefully someone will chime in and give some help. I’m trying to do the exact same thing as you with Win911.
For those of us attempting to troubleshoot WIN-911, we salute you.
Hi @BrandoUSC,
Please share the full log file and template file with me so that I can reproduce the issue on my side. You can upload log file and template file to Google Drive and then share the link with me.
Thanks,
I have another question for you, when you got your sim from Verizon, what kind of plan did they initially put you on? Was it a phone plan or data plan. Or did you go the official route and get the modem and sim from Win911?

Could you give more detailed instructions on how I should capture the log file, and what parameters should be included?
Also, am I expected to share the link to Google Drive publicly on here, or is there a way to correspond via an email address?
Hi @BrandoUSC,
***Here are the instructions for obtaining the log file and template file:
- The configuration template file can be found in ACEmanager → Template. Provide any desired name for the Template Name, and then press Download to retrieve the template file.
- Obtain the log file:
a. Go to AceManager > Admin > Log > Configure Logging.
Set all log levels to DEFAULT (NOTICE).
Set Linux Syslog to DISPLAY.
Then select Apply.
b. Reboot the gateway.
Perform the SMS message receiving process on the LX40.
c. Go to Admin → View log → Download Logs.
d. Share a screenshot of “Last Incomming Message” under Services → SMS after you sending successfully SMS message to LX40.
***You can upload screenshot, log file and template file to Google Drive, then click to my name and click ‘Message’ to share link. The link you share will not be public.
Thanks,
Everything is prepared on Drive, but I do not see an option to message you after clicking on your name. Can you provide screenshots to show where this option is? Thank you.
The SIM is on a phone plan from Verizon, according to the customer. With other sites, we have had an issue when the “CDMAless” option was enabled on the line. That is apparently part of this line’s configuration, but Verizon has told me that they cannot remove it. They were supposed to follow up with me via email for more technical assistance, but that never happened.
This is all I see when I click on your name:
Is there a configuration I need to change in order to see the Message option?
I really appreciate your replies, Verizon has been no help. Yesterday I was told that we have a local Verizon rep, I wasn’t aware of this, or I would have called him from the start. I think he will be much more helpful than the people in another country that I spent two hours on the phone with. Also, I believe the reason that the AT&T sim didn’t work is because I put it in the modem as soon as it was activated and it seams to have provisioned as a data line. I tried it in my phone and it wouldn’t let me make calls or text. I guess hindsight is 20/20. I’ll let you know if I get anywhere with either company.
Hi @BrandoUSC,
After checking the internal system, I found a similar issue related to receiving SMS on the Verizon network.
Please try setting “SMS Message Format” under Services > SMS > Advanced to “3GPP” and see if it resolves the issue.
Thanks,
AMAZING - that worked! It now shows the SMS I send as the last incoming message. Thank you!
Unfortunately, this still hasn’t allowed me to acknowledge alarms in WIN-911. But I am making progress.
I will mark this as the solution, but I will continue to post if I resolve the WIN-911 issue for the benefit of others.
Addendum: After restarting the WIN-911 services, we are rolling, and acknowledgement is working!
Again, thanks so much - this was a major headache for the customer!
@butchharvill, let me know if this fix works for you as well.
