FX30 with Verzon: Can't Connect to network

I’m trying to use an FX30 LTE as a USB modem, but it never connects to the network.
I understand the newest firmware doesn’t “officially” support Verizon, but I was told by support from Sierra that “The FX30 LTE-M has our WP7702 global module. It should work with Cat-M1 networks including VZW if needed.”

Using Windows 10, Verizon SIM card.

‘at+cgdcont?’ Returns the following.

Hi Daniel,
Which firmware are you using?
Could you help to share the output of these commands:

  • ATI
  • ATI8
  • AT!BAND?
  • AT!SELRAT?
  • AT!SELCIOT?
  • AT+CGDCONT?
  • AT+COPS=?

Thanks,

Hi Jerdung,

Firmware (from ‘AT+GMR’) is SWI9X06Y_02.16.06.00 7605a6 jenkins 2018/06/20 17:56:12
(if this requires updating, can you include instructions on how to do so?)

The output of each command is below, however, a forewarning that I now have a second problem - the radio appears to be off and will not come back on. I imagine that will impact the output and may hide the original problem.
(the new problem FX30 Radio Off)

Hi there,
If you execute the command:
AT!FWD?ALVER

I think your running R9.1.1.013

Verizon radio module firmware wasn’t released for this version.

If you’re able to wait a couple of weeks, R11 will be released and a Verizon image will be available.

If you’d like to experiment, you can try going to source.sierrawireless.com and install the Verizon spk radio firmware from R12. I can’t guarantee that will work though.

Make sure you don’t use the WP77 one click and don’t install the WP77 yocto or legato images. Only install the Verizon spk.

BR,
Chris

Hi Chris,

You’re exactly right about the firmware version! Thank you, and good to know the Verizon-ready version is coming out soon.

For now, I’ve acquired an AT&T SIM card. Unfortunately, I’m having the same issue as before…
My current attempt at a solution is confirming that all’s well on the AT&T side, and leaving the device alone to see if it solves it’s own issues (which I’ve seen as a solution elsewhere).

I tried AT+CGDCONT with the APN as ‘NXTGENPHONE’ and as ‘broadband’, with all possible profile numbers.

With AT+CGDCONT=1,“IPV4V6”,“NXTGENPHONE”

AT+COPS=1,0,“AT&T” gives
+CME ERROR: no network service

AT!GSTATUS? gives

Hi Daniel,
It might take awhile to register on CatM if the radio scans through all the NB1 bands first.

Are you certain your SIM supports CatM?

You could try registering on GSM only first by:
AT!SELRAT=2

If the radio attaches and registers, then you can start a data session.

BR,
Chris

Hi Chris,

Sorry for the delay in my response - I’ve been waiting for AT&T to turn on the service for my new SIM. I hoped that would solve all of my problems, but it doesn’t seem to be the case.

About the card supporting CatM, honestly I’m not sure. I assume I would check with AT&T?

I tried AT!SELRAT=2, with the now-active AT&T SIM card, but I seem to be having more or less the same issue as before.

Hi Daniel,
Could you please post the output of the following commands:
ATI
ATI8
AT!FWD?ALVER
AT!IMPREF?
AT!SELRAT?
AT!BAND?

With R9.1.1.013, you might need to set the band after changing the RAT to 2. You can try setting the band to NA 2G only:
AT!BAND=4

If your SIM card is working, it should attach and register on the network, assuming you’re using either the Generic or the AT&T image.

Once you’re able to get onto 2G, then try LTE once you’ve confirmed your SIM is enabled for CatM.

BR,
Chris

Hi Chris,

Still no luck. Below are the commands before and after manually setting the band. After this, I tried LTE, and I tried the APN NXTGENPHONE (as opposed to NXTGENWIRELESS), but didn’t connect in any case.

Hi Daniel,
Could you help to try with another apn, ex: “phone”?
If it doesn’t work, let apn empty in command AT+CGDCONT=1,“IPV4V6”,""
Then detach/attach network again

  • AT+CGATT=0
  • AT+CGATT=1

Thanks,

Hi Daniel,
I apologize, I just looked it up and discovered AT&T already turned off their 2G network.

You’ll need to set your SELRAT and BAND back to LTE. Could you confirm your SIM card is indeed enabled for CatM?

cm data connect or changing APN won’t work because the radio hasn’t attached and registered yet.

If you’re able to confirm CatM is enabled, then try disabling NB1 so the radio will register more quickly. Otherwise, it could take a few hours before attaching since the radio will scan all CatM and NB1 bands.

BR,
Chris

Hi Henry, Jerdung,

I want to thank you again for all of your help with this - I was finally able to confirm that the SIM I was given was not set up for CatM. We have new SIM cards on order, but for the time being, my current SIM’s plan has been switched to 3G, and I am now using an FX30 3G, Generic.

For the first time, the light on the FX30 is yellow (instead of red). Following along with the “USB Modem” instructions in the manual, it now fails when activating the PDP context.
GStatus reports the RRC state as connecting for a few seconds, then fails and returns to “disconnected”.

I also see that Windows has a new option in network connections, “AT&T (HSPA) Disconnected”. If I try to connect I get “Can’t connect to this network. Enter an APN and try again.”

Can you assist me with this new issue?

Chris

Hi Chris,

After doing cm data apn NXTGENPHONE, I still had no connection

root@fx30:~# cm data connect &
root@fx30:~# cm data
Index: 1
APN: NXTGENPHONE
PDP Type: IPV4V6
Connected: no
Auth type: PAP
User name:
Password:

I tried the AT command as well, but had the same behavior where it immediately seems to be connected, then says it’s connecting, then disconnected.

at+cgdcont=1,“IPV4V6”,“NXTGENPHONE”
OK

I now have an AT&T CatM SIM, so I am going to try that next.

Best,
Daniel

Using the FX30LTE and AT&T CatM plan, I initially had the same problems - no indication that anything had changed - then, eventually, it connected! I now have internet access.

Thank you for your help, and if you have any suggestions on the 3G issue please let me know.

Hi Daniel,
For the 3G, if you use a SIM with 3G service and the correct APN it should be able to start a data session.
Can you confirm your 3G SIM with your carrier?
BR,
Chris
