We have a number of AirLink RV50s utilized in the field for communication with our utility stations. Periodically we will loose communication with the network and not be able to remotely view data from our utility sites. The AirLink RV50 will not automatically reconnect to the network unless unplugged or reset. Once unplugged or reset it will almost instantly connect and clear our communication fault alarms. Obviously this is a large issue as we have over 20 utility sites utilizing the AirLink RV50 and often have to make rounds to each site and unplug or reset the RV50 anytime there is an issue with Verizon. Is there a way to remotely reset these units? Or an update that allows them to automatically reconnect back to the network? Hard to believe such a high grade piece of tech requires to be unplugged and plugged back in anytime there is a network outage. Rarely will the RV50 connect back to Verizon itself. Anytime we loose communication with the network it requires a physical reset which is about a monthly occurrence. What are our options? Thanks.
We have some RV50s. I will try and help - I am not aware of a way to reset remotely when in that state. Maybe AirLink support can help by using ALMS. I think we need more information. What is the RV50 version in use? I am thinking what options exist - maybe force the RV50 to LTE only, see if this resolves the issue. I would try this.
Could you please clarify what you mean by “Automatically reconnect with the network”? Are you talking about reconnecting to cellular?
There are a few settings you should verify and/or set.
First, make sure “Cellular Watchdog” under "WAN/Cellular tab’s Cellular → General → Cellular Watchdog section is enabled. With this set, the entire router will reboot when connections to the cellular network fail. NOTE: In our fleet of 180 units, we have had fewer than 20 reboots for this cause in the last year.
Next, consider using the WAN/Cellular → Cellular → Monitor section. We have the default with the following changes: 'Monitor Type: ’ is ‘Ping Test’, ‘Ping Test IP address’: ‘’, ‘Link Recovery’: ‘Low Power Mode’ If you don’t have a reliable public IP address, I would suggest something like 8.8.8.8 which seems to be a very reliable IP address.
WIth the cellular monitor, when IP responses are not received, the cellular modem goes into low power mode and back into normal operation. This forces it to reconnect .
One final suggestion which may not be what you want to do, but tends to be very helpful. Start looking at the logs for the cellular. In the Admin → Log → Configure Logging, set everything to View In Logs as No, then set Cellular to Yes. Apply the changes. This will tell you to reboot, but ignore that. Then go to Admin → Logging → View Log. I typically download the log and use a good text editor to eliminate useless noise so I can find the important messages.
Thank you for the insightful reply. Yes you are correct, I am referring to our units automatically reconnecting to the cellular data network after experiencing a brief outage. Similar to how a home WiFi router does. When we lose connection to the cellular data network, the AirLink will not reconnect unless physically power cycled or reset.
@lhansen, have you tried setting the Cellular Monitor as described in my reply above?
If so, could you upload and attach the log files?
Hi @lhansen,
Welcome to our community!
Currently, I still haven’t noticed you update any information for this topic.
Do you enable Watchdog? I can check the log file and template file from RV50 to know that how the network connection disconnected.
Thanks,
Chau
