I am new to using Sierra Wireless product so just starting out. I have a lab MP70 that is configured the exact way I want it. I would like to take this router’s information and use it as a standard on my other routers.
I understand I need to generate a template, I am doing this from the router/template button. I pulled down a template selecting “passwords”, “device info” and “inactive config”. When I pull it down and look at it, I see device specific information. I am expecting it to be device agnostic and only have the settings I want. How do I properly use the config the way I want?
MP70 Aleos 4.17.1.005 Firmware EM7511_01.14.22.00_ATT_002.071_001
I never select the device info and/or inactive config and do not end up with device specific information in the template. That said, I did upload with those set and then downloaded to another device and then uploaded that devices config and looked at the difference between what was downloaded, uploaded with the same settings after, and uploaded with no checkmarks and there really was no difference.
Keep in mind that loading a template onto a device might have different config settings than what the device’s OS is capable of handling. These fall into the inactive config bucket.
For my purposes, I get a device on my workbench into the state I would like it with the latest OS on it. I then upload the template without any checkmarks and check that into our revision control system. I can then cycle through all the field devices, even ones with earlier versions of the OS, and apply the template.
In my case, I have a mixture of, primarily RV50 and RV50X devices. The RV50’s last OS version is 4.16.0.017 while the RV50X is up to 4.18.0.012. This means I need to keep one of the RV50X devices back on my workbench to help with maintaining the template.
One thing I find helpful is the About page that shows the template applied date and the last config change date. If the config change date is after the template applied date, I typically just re-apply the current template.
We also name our templates with the purpose and date stamp. I have four different classes of devices attached via serial to the modem. This ends up giving me DevType1_2025_04_07.xml, DevType2_2025_04_07.xml, etc with the only differences being the serial port setup for each device type. I maintain those differences using file difference tools like notepad++'s compare plugin and/or github.
I forgot to mention that I also maintain a baseline template for each version of Aleos on my devices. To get that, I do a reset to factory config by holding the reset button while applying power until the power LED flashes red (usually 7-10 seconds) and then uploading that template without changing anything.
This makes it really easy to separate configuration changes I make from normal changes as things update.
Hi @Kinley.Winters,
Welcome to our community!
Currently, in the user guide AirLink MP70 for downloading template, those are the only available options (Include Passwords, Include Device Info and Include Inactive Configurations). If you don’t want to include passwords or device info, please uncheck those sections.
For more details, refer to ‘Saving a Router Configuration as a Template’ section on pages 20 and 21 of the ALEOS 4.18.0 Software Configuration User Guide for AirLink MP70 at the following link: https://source.sierrawireless.com/resources/airlink/software_reference_docs/airlink-rv-series---configuration-guide/#sthash.FQPfAbuu.dpbs
Thanks,
