EM7455 not receiving any satellites / getting GPS fix

Hi, everyone. I’ve got a Toughbook FZ-55 Mk2 that had an EM7511 in it, but I swapped it out for an EM7455 w/ generic firmware. The 7455 is recognized within Device Manager (this is Win11 24H2) and it also appears in Panasonic PC Hub, Sierra Skylight, and SW GNSS Tool. It is running the latest drivers and firmware.

The issue I am having is that when I use Panasonic PC Hub to test/confirm the GPS functionality I am getting no satellite fixes. Even though I see and can manually set the NMEA port, I try the “Port Scan” feature and it finds the same port I had already selected. However, when I turn on the GPS I get zero satellite fixes even with a completely clear sky view. With the old 7511 that was in there, I would get near-instant fixes even sitting in my office near a large window and it was accurate.

I have also tried using the SW GNSS Tool, and the card is recognized but I get absolutely no satellites shown and it never gives me a GPS fix. The previous 7511 would again pickup a fix/satellites right away. The 7455 isn’t configured on the cellular network yet, but I should still be able to get a GPS fix.

I have the WWAN ID set to 29 in the BIOS (the 7511 was 36) and everything on the config/software side suggests that this should be working, as everything is recognized and up to date.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

have you compared AT!GPSSATINFO? between EM7511 and EM7455?

I hadn’t run that command on the 7511, but doing so on the 7455 returns “NO SAT INFO”. I can reinstall the 7511 and do the same and respond back. Thanks for your time.

BTW, make sure all antennas are connected

I mirrored the antenna setup in the 7511 (which is the same as what was confirmed by the 7455 vendor) - I’ve got a blue cable going to “MAIN”, red cable to “AUX” and the GPS connector is not populated / there is no wire.

I just reconnected the 7511 and updated the WWAN ID in the BIOS back to 36 (what it originally was with the 7511) and I get immediate satellite fixes; currently using 20 satellites and I can confirm it is dead-on accurate as to my location.

Running that command in the GNSS Tool on the 7511 returns 20 satellites in view.

could this be the problem in EM7455?

I don’t think so, as this is what other users on the FZ-55 (and a number of other Toughbook models) report as the standard / expected setup for the EM7455. The instructions from the vendor from whom I bought the card also explicitly state this is the expected wiring.

Is there any command that designates the specific antenna port on the 7455 to use as the active GPS port?

i think you need to connect GPS antenna to isolate if the issue is related to this antenna

This is very odd / interesting… I switched the AUX cable to the GPS port and now I am getting only GPS L1 satellites, but no L2 or GNSS as I was on the 7511.

have you tried to connect all antennas?

This ended up just being a bad card. I got a replacement EM7455 and have the wiring connected the original way (nothing on the “GPS” connector) and it is working as expected. Thank you for your replies and your time!

good that you can figure out the problem

I wonder if the GPSENABLE of AT!CUSTOM? in the bad card has been enabled…
Anyway, you can compare with the good EM7455 card
