EM9291 not recognized by OS

Having a problem getting the EM9291 seen by Windows - it doesn’t show up in the device manager at all, under “Network Adapters” or even in “Other Devices”. It’s like it’s just not plugged in at all. No luck with OpenWRT either.

I read some very old threads on here that said very early 91xx devices might not work with a USB adaptor, but nothing about the 9291 at all. This one was purchased from Digikey just last week. The same USB 3.0-M.2 adaptor works fine with the EM7565 I tried it with.

I also tried it in a Windows tablet with a mini PCIe slot with an M.2-mini PCIe adaptor - same result.

For your m.2 adaptor: you need to check these pins for connecting with USB:
pin 20 → high (1.8V), pin 22 → high (1.8V)

I’ll have to get my scope probe out tonight since I don’t have any voltmeter leads small enough to measure these pins. I’m curious if it’s a USB issue, why it didn’t work when plugged into the mini PCIe slot of the tablet - unless the tablet only has the USB pins connected to its PCIe slots.
