EM9191 unstable after possible bad firmware update

I have a EM9191 that is constantly resetting itself and will not start up it’s 5G radio.
I have a separate EM9191 that behaves as I would imagine, is rock solid, and always connects to 5G without complaint.

There is a possibility that the first EM9191 unit was flashed with newer firmware from the driver here instead of the correct one.

I have a feeling this is related to the issue because it is the only variable I can see that may have changed.

I would ask if it is possible to completely re-image the modem rather than the standard firmware flashing process; something lower level that might be able to undo the damage a bad, but supposedly successful, flash would entail.

Otherwise I have tried rmareset and nvrestore and neither options seem to clear things out enough to bring the modem back to working order after flashing the latest fw release.

What do you mean by “constantly resetting itself and will not start up it’s 5G radio” but you can still “tried rmareset and nvrestore”?
Does the module really keep resetting?

So by resetting I meant rebooting. The modem will reboot about every 10-20 seconds from what I can tell.

The caveat being that whenever I remove the SIM, the modem is more stable, and I am able to do some troubleshooting with at commands.

I Just so happened to notice that the 5G radio never engages because it seems that stability improves when I disable the 5G radio with SELRAT.

Have you used usb adpator instead of usb power?

That’s what I thought as well.

I currently have an auxiliary power of 5v 4a available to the modem.

To add insult to injury, a different EM9191 works perfectly in the same enclosure, with the same power being applied to it.

Device is bootlooping through all of the above commands. ENDC wont engage only LTE.

Do you have any recommendation on how to make it operate in 5G SA or ENDC?

I’m still curious if there is a way to rewrite the entire modem, as it is acting so oddly, but I’m assuming someone else might need to chime in on that.

I upgrade from fw 01.07.19 to 03.09.xx, i don’t see such problem

I am wondering if particular 5G band is making the crash, you can lock to particular band to see what happens.
Here is an example to lock to n66 band:

I setup the above masks for this test.

09(LTE Only), device works flawlessly.

10, device connects to n71 and appears to work fine until I run a speedtest and the it shuts down for about 5 seconds and comes back up. I close telnet connection during this downtime.

11, device reboots after about 15 seconds without any input from me.

12, Constant reboots when sim inserted, cannot get a telnet connection because of constant reboots.

13, connects fine, no reboots when idle, similar outcome where it eventually resets after I run a speed test to put a load on it.

and to reiterate, I have a power supply connected to this modem and a different modem works perfectly fine in the same enclosure.

Does anything stick out to you with this data?

Seems no crash information in FLOG

That is odd, the device certainly loses serial connection and i can hear the USB enumerate. I would assume it’s a crash.

Is it possible that the device is messed up to a point that it wouldn’t log crashes?
