Modbus RTU/TCP & Sierra Wireless Airlink RV50 Cellular Modem Configuration Help

Good morning,

My name is Joseph Rhodes; I’m an Electronics Technician with the City of Tuscaloosa at the Hilliard Fletcher Wastewater Treatment Plant. We use Sierra Wireless AirLink RV50 cellular modems at a lot of our liftstations to communicate IO from PLCs back to our SCADA system. These cellular modems have only been used as a communication means for trafficking data back and forth. I just recently discovered that you could do so much more with these cellular modems and I’d love to learn a lot more about these cellular modems. I’d love to learn more about the modbus rtu/tcp functions of these cellular modems. Is there a modbus address map floating around for these cellular modems? One example of what I would like to do with this modbus function is to potentially extract the signal strength of the cellular modem and show it on VTScada. Is there an instruction set that details how to go about configuring the serial port of these cellular modems? I want to test bench these celluar modems and see what their limits are.

I worked with Modbus once before. The Modbus information I needed was here in this pdf,

41115066 ALEOS 4.18.2 Software Configuration User Guide for AirLink RV50X r1

You can find this @ the Source support page. When I needed more help, I contacted the distributor where we bought the cellular modems. The distributor support was great.

Hi @joseph.rhodes,

Welcome to our community!

For details on Modbus and Serial port, please refer to the section 11: Serial Configuration and B: Modbus/BSAP Configuration in AirLink RV50X Software Configuration Guide at the following link: source.sierrawireless.com/resources/airlink/software_reference_docs/airlink-rv-series—configuration-guide/
