Help with MC7455 in OpenWRT router

#101

Would switching to qmi mode work better than mbim mode?

I am still getting disconnects when using verizon.

So far my att is solid in the home internet.

But i cannot get my verizon one to stay connected

Hi, thanks to westrem I got my lede router working with mc7455, but connection speed is very low (~6mpbs) compared to ~60mbps on my phone.

Thats gstatus:

Is band 7 the same band you were using on your phone? Have you tried other bands?

#104

That is actually not totally right  It is true that the MBIM support in ModemManager is less powerful than the QMI support in ModemManager; but…

libqmi/qmicli supports “QMI over MBIM” for these devices; which means you can run any qmicli command directly over the /dev/cdc-wdm port exposed by the MBIM kernel driver; at the same time as ModemManager is running (with the “mbim-proxy” setup). E.g. while MM is running in MBIM mode (or in QMI mode) you could run:

$ qmicli -d /dev/cdc-wdm0 --device-open-proxy --nas-get-cell-location-info

Note: the ‘auto-detection’ of the underlying kernel driver is only available since libqmi 1.17.901. For versions before that one you need to explicitly pass “–device-open-mbim” additionally if the modem is running in MBIM mode.

Here looks the most active place to ask my EM7455 question.
Big Thanks in front.
Here is the scenario:
I am trying to get em7455 with usb adapter working with ASUS ac68u(have latest LEDE on it)

My EM7455 is dell version, I was able to change it to generic with help of a post from ipxon

Postby ipxon » Thu Dec 01, 2016 7:26 pm

1- Download driver from dell website.
2- Uncompress .exe (with 7zip).
3- enter to folder and edit Configuration.ini and set USBCOMP=8 (change 0 to 8 ).
4- execute .exe (It is in the same folder as the file Configuration.ini).
5- plug card em7455 and open Device administrator. You should see the DELL modem, open a find COM port.
6- Open AT Port (with Putty or other program) and excute this commands:
AT!ENTERCND="A710"
AT!USBPID=9071,9070
AT!USBVID=1199
AT!USBPRODUCT="EM7455"
AT!PRIID="9904802","001.001","Generic-Laptop"
AT!RESET
7- Install Sierra Wireless drivers.
8- Done :D

Credits: baodo.
Good Luck!

Then I followed westrem’s guide from beginning of this post. Now I can see EM7455 is connected

I googled the issue and found this topic “Topic: Sierra EM7455: MBIM problems”

schoerg said this is working for him :
umbim -n -d /dev/cdc-wdm0 caps
umbim -n -t 1 -d /dev/cdc-wdm0 subscriber
umbim -n -t 2 -d /dev/cdc-wdm0 attach
umbim -v -n -t 3 -d /dev/cdc-wdm0 connect “r.ispsn”
umbim -v -n -t 4 -d /dev/cdc-wdm0 config

I got the ip but still no internet.
Here is LEDE interface in attachment.

Please help

#106

The “WAN” part in LEDE is grayed out can’t edit.
It said Unsupported protocol type.
Install protocol extensions…

got Luci proto for mc7455 on mbim router
from westrem

still no internet.
if I connect it to my computer it get internet by itself

What does your ‘/lib/netifd/proto/mbim.sh’ file look like? The LEDE build I am on didn’t have some pieces required for FCC AUTH (still needed for Dell/Lenovo EM7455 that are ‘changed’ into vanilla EM7455 by way of pid/vid changes). Also, not sure if out-of-the-box mbim.sh contains all necessary pieces to set gateway/dns/ip of your WAN interface set since EM7455 is using direct IP. Anyways, here’s the mbim.sh I’m using from a post I found on lteforum.at (all credit to Gicht), hope it is helpful (sorry if you’ve already seen it):

hazarjast, I tried with no luck. ( installed uqmi and kmod-usb-net-qmi-wwan)

I used at!image=0

and then redo westrem’s procedure sever times from scratch. It was working for 20 minutes(40mbps down, 0.01up wierd), after few 4k videos it quite working no matter what I do.
But when plug in my computer, it’s still working.
here is the system log

What version of lede are you using?

#111

40 down and .01 up sounds like something is messed up with your antenna setup possibly. This happened to me when I was using the auxiliary antenna port only and not the main. You are not mismatching RP-SMA and SMA fittings are you?

#112

I am using 17.01.0 found in the list lede-project.org/toh/views/toh_fwdownload
I’ll try the newer version

#113

the antenna connector should be correct, when connect to computer it’s uploading at 10+ mbps.
even on speedtest it shows 0.01 upload, it still upload at 10+mbps to google drive

I had this problem when using Sprint…but now I’ve switched to Verizon and it doesn’t happen anymore. I wonder if it just depends on what tower we’re on.

On another note, here is my biggest problem…and I hope someone can help me cause it’s driving me absolutely mad! If I ever need to restart the router, I have a hell of a time getting connected to the internet again. After every reboot, the router reverts back to a previous date/time. I can sync the date/time with my browser but this never helps. The router has to somehow get it on its own. I don’t know if this is the actual problem, or just contributing. Right now, this is really my only problem. It happened when I had Sprint, and it happens now that I have Verizon. Seems to me like it is either software/hardware related…maybe a timing issue. I spent 45 minutes yesterday rebooting the router over and over and watching the logs until it finally got the right date/time and gave me an internet connection. Very frustrating. Here is the log from when it happened back in December when I had Sprint. I don’t know linux so I can’t tell if there are any clues here as to why the WAN keeps going down. I have the modem plugged into a powered USB adapter so I don’t believe it’s a power issue.

Don’t use a powered USB connector. There might be a possibility that the device stays connected even if you reboot.

Alternatively use at!reset to force a “reconnect” via USB.

#116

Before I got the powered hub, I would see the following in my log…so I was advised to get the hub.

Thu Dec 15 11:59:54 2016 kern.info kernel: [167756.206993] usb 1-1: USB disconnect, device number 2

I believe Westrem said he connected some wires from the USB adapter to the USB 3.0 port for additional power. Doing it that way would cause the power to cut out on the modem and force it to reboot whereas my way has constant external power. But yesterday I did have the adapter unplugged because I removed and reinserted the sim card. Maybe I didn’t unplug/reboot/reset in the correct order.

I will definitely try the at!reset though. Can that be added to a script that runs on reboot? Thanks.

#117

Probably, although you need some time after the at!reset for it to happen.

check the comgt scripts at /etc/gcom. You can modify them to do the at!reset.

You can then run it this way:

comgt -d /dev/ttyUSB2 -s /etc/gcom/example.gcom

Make sure you are using a good usb y cable and use both usb ports. Look at your kernel logs, do you see the usb device connecting and disconecting?

hey,

i am looking for a way to know if the mbim link is down without actually using the link. (so pinging a host in the internet is not available)
is there no mbim event for that, so that the link will be set down? like when i pull the ethernet-cable?

thanks

Hello,

How do I find out for sure if the MC7455 is in MBIM or QMI mode? I am asking because other sources on the net (SIGQUIT blog) indicated this modem only supports QMI, and I also see ModemManager exchanging QMI messages. Here I read though this device has an MBIM-mode, and there are other signs that MBIM-mode might be active for me, such as non-functional location support in MM.

And a second question, I saw in an earlier post in this thread how to switch to QMI mode. How do I switch to MBIM mode?

Thank you,
Karoly
