Hi,
I want to update the firmware of MC7411. Can someone guide me through the steps.

did you install the correct windows driver?

have you tried different USB ports?

The point is that Sierra Wireless modem is not attached to the windows machine.

It is connected to an embedded motherboard having operating system as debian 10 linux. This motherboard is connected to my PC via serial port.

Now I want to upgrade the firmware of the modem through my PC.
Explain the required steps

Then you need to upgrade firmware by Mbpl firmware download tool MBPL_SDK_R48_ENG5-fwdwl.bin.tar.gz

I am going to assume that the Linux drivers for the MC7411 module are already installed onto the embedded motherboard with debian 10 linux operating system.

Is that right?

If so, then you have to install the linux tool to update the module firmware onto the embedded motherboard’s OS image.

Download this file from the Source support page, MBPL_SDK_R48_ENG5-fwdwl.bin.tar

Inside this compressed tarball package is a readme file. Located in this directory,

\SampleApps\Dynamic\fw-download-tool

This readme file is great! and explains everything you need to do. I am going to cut and paste some of it,

You have to use the make command.

You have to use the right fw download command line options.

And you have to download from the Source support page the new FW download file that you want to install. Copy this file to the embedded motherboad’s OS image.

If you have not done this all before, then maybe I should suggest contacting the distributor from whom you bought the module. The distributors have support staff that should be familiar with this. And can guide you. We buy modules from Premier Wireless now Optconnect. Great support from the guys @ Optconnect Patrick and Tony.

I am using the following command:

I am running this command from:

/MBPL_R48.0.26_B5451/MBPL_R48.0.26_B5451/SampleApps/Static/fw-download-tool/bin

I initially tried using the Dynamic version from:

/MBPL_R48.0.26_B5451/MBPL_R48.0.26_B5451/SampleApps/Dynamic/fw-download-tool/bin

However, the Dynamic executable fails because of library compatibility issues. My Linux system is relatively old, while the Dynamic binaries appear to have been built against newer versions of Linux libraries. Therefore, I am using the Static version instead.

The firmware download process does start successfully, and the modem is detected and switched into download mode. However, the firmware download eventually fails.

Here are the relevant logs:

So the tool appears to successfully:

  1. Detect the MC7411.
  2. Detect the QDL port and /dev/cdc-wdm0.
  3. Switch the modem into download mode.
  4. Detect the modem in BOOT and HOLD mode.
  5. Start downloading the .cwe firmware.

But it fails with:

eSDP_FWDWL_ERR_FIREHOSE_STATE_ERR(120)

Has anyone encountered this error with an MC7411, particularly when using the static fw-download-toolhostx86_64 from MBPL R48.0.26?

I would particularly like to understand what FIREHOSE_STATE_ERR(120) indicates and whether it points to a problem with the firmware package, the QDL/Firehose communication, the USB/QDL port, or the version of MBPL being used.

Any guidance on how to troubleshoot this without physical access to the modem would be greatly appreciated.

I don’t see such firmware in the official page:

Do you see problem with other official firmware?

BTW, have you installed the MBPL USB driver MBPL_DRIVERS_R48_ENG4-usb-pcie-src.tar.gz ?
