mangoOH PCB BOM is outrageously expensive

Hey guys,
We took the BOM for the PCB to a local contract manufacturer in order to get a quote for building some of these devices for prototyping and beta testing. The CM called us and wanted to know who put this BOM together and why these specific materials were chosen for the PCB because they were not standard at all. They said they were so out of the norm that the cost for the boards were over 50x the cost of a normal board.

Here is what we were quoted:

PCB Details:

  • FR4 170 TG MATERIAL
  • 2U" ENIGN FINISH
  • 0.062" +/-0.007"BOARD THICKNESS
  • CONTROLLED IMP
  • TDR
  • L1-2 & L7-8(LASER DRILL BLIND VIAS
  • L2-7 MECHANICAL DRILL
  • L8-4 (12 PLACES) BACK DRILL
    Special:
    RoHS Compliance ,Impedence Control ,Blind/Buried Vias

Qty – Price Per Unit

5 – $672.00
10 – $351.80
25 – $159.68

Our CM states that they have never seen these requirements before and cannot understand why there would be a need to use such expensive materials for this board.

Can anyone at Sierra advise on what the thoughts were around these specifications? Were you aware of the cost of this design specification?

Please advise asap.
Without a more reasonable PCB design, there is no way our company (or any company for that matter) could rationalize building this device.

Controlled Impedance is standard for anything RF;

Blind/Buried Vias aren’t that unusual these days - are they?

Your PCB vendor needs to provide you the following info:

a. NRE for the PCB : This is a one time cost and not something you need to pay
b. Cost per PCB: This is what you pay per PCB panel.

So please provide the following:

NRE cost for mangOH : x dollars
Cost per PCB : y dollars

What you see on mangOH PCB technology is normal for most PCB vendors.

So, thats why it is Non-Recurring cost.
